Most of the time, the type of clients that I come across are upstanding, quality companies that are looking to grow and expand via my services. They want to get their name out that and stand out amongst their competitors. They contribute to the community and create good local jobs for my area and I feel great that I am able to work with them. You don’t always end up with nightmare clients, but when you do, it can be very frustrating.
Sometimes as a designer, however, we have been approached by a client that we feel uneasy working with. Maybe they are a fighting entertainment company and you disagree with violence. Maybe there is a company that has approached you that showed a blatant disregard for the environment. Maybe they are a sexual product or movie company looking for web development and are seeking your services. These may not necessarily be nightmare clients, but they could be bad for your business’s reputation. How do you handle the situation? As in the latter case, who we design for directly reflects on us as designers. Do you take the job and leave that project out of your portfolio? I wouldn’t. Someone will eventually find out, or word will get around and more of those clients will approach you and the situation gets tougher to control. Do you send them out the door with a stern snap of the fingers? Or do you deal with them in a polite and cordial manner?
There are other clients that seem reputable, but once you deal with them, they try to bend the contract and your nerves to the point where you want to tear up your agreement. Other times there are nightmare clients that spend what seems like forever on the phone with you on a daily basis mulling over a seemingly simple project, beating the details into you over and over again. What do you do in these types of situations?
When you are approached by a potential client that makes you feel uncomfortable to work with, it is best to be honest. A good way of putting it is that you are not the designer with the skills set that they are looking for. I have also told some clients that I couldn’t possibly handle any more projects at this time, in order to send them elsewhere. None of that is a lie; I am usually busy with 3-4 decent sized projects at once.
The Money Isn’t Always Worth It
When you own your own business, you can choose who your clients are. Sometimes it hurts to let a good paying project go, but it is better to keep your reputation intact, because that is a little harder to repair than your wallet. Also, when you take on certain projects and do a good job, you are more likely to see that client again, and they will tell their colleagues and you will get more clients just like them. Sometimes the agony of dealing with nightmare clients that constantly harass you, have no boundaries, and send you a ton of emails just isn’t worth it.
Always Get That Contract
A good idea for non-paying nightmare clients is to make sure you always have a solid contract, or working agreement. This gives you insurance that if they do not pay you, that you can take them to court for what they owe you. This is the not so fun side of owning your own business, but it happens. I also have a section in my contract that states that their payment is due no later than 30 days after the completion of the project. If they have any mid-project payments due, those due dates have to be met, or work of their project ceases until payment is received. You have to be sure to protect yourself financially, along with your reputation.
I want to hear about your nightmare clients and difficult situations. We have all had them. Sharing horror stories helps others and newer designers to watch out for some of these pitfalls.
What I have realized from being a web designer for years is that we all have a different ways of doing things when it comes to creating good design. Some of us like to do a mainly traditional route and sketch everything out. Some people like to take a bunch of photographs and compile them, or surf the internet and compile many photos of the subject that they are working on. From those pictures, they compose a general idea or consistent look to their artwork.
Many designers do hours, sometimes days of research before they even put pencil to paper. They research the history of their subject, evaluate market research of the competition, analyze data, conduct focus groups, etc. When it comes time to sketch out ideas, many designers do dozens, if not hundreds of thumbnails. This method is a great way of getting the ideas, god or bad, out of your head and onto paper. Many designers go off of what their client has in mind or what they envisioned. Some truly great designers are sought after for their style, and the client wants them to make their own creative mark regarding their design work.
What I wanted to do was to hear about everyone’s different workflows regarding their design or artwork. Also, I would like to hear from photographers about where they come up with their ideas for shots. I am not a photographer by any means, and I am curious to see if they keep a sketch or idea book with their ideas regarding commercial photo shoots, and for fine art photographers, I would like to know where they get their inspiration and ideas.
When I do my design work, I like to take what the client needs, and try to put a truly creative and interesting spin on it. Depending on the client and their budget, sometimes I will sit down for hours sketching out thumbnails and ideas until I have that moment of epiphany, where the truly marketable solution shines through. These methods are not an every case scenario, but it is when I do these types of things that my truly good ideas and best design work comes through. I encourage you to try different creative methods, because sometimes it takes looking at something in a different way to be able to create something truly different. As we all know, there is often more than one way to accomplish the same thing. This is especially true when it comes to web design. There are right ways and wrong ways to do things, but there are also viable alternatives as well. You could always use custom fonts to your website using @font-face. As easy as that is, I am going to show you how to use an alternative, which is adding Google web fonts to your website. It is just as easy (some might say even easier) to add Google web fonts to your website. You won’t believe how easy it is to add custom fonts to your next web project.
The interface itself isn’t that hard. I actually like how the interface is set up for you to choose which fonts you would like to use. You can preview each font at the size that you would like. You can also sort the selection by different parameters, such as what is popular, or what is trending. You can also view the entire family to see what the variations are before you decide o implement them on your site. This is excellent, because it saves you time and you get to see what each font will look like ahead of time, instead of using a trial-and-error method.
You have to make a selection, Which I Chose Rokkitt, because it has two weights. I chose one with multiple weights, to show you how to use them in your website. Click on add to Collection and a blue menu will show up at the bottom. This part threw me off a bit, because it only shows 1 font, even though there are two weights. When you click on Use, the next screen will ask you how many weights you want to use. Here, you can check both weights to implement them. What I really like about using Google Web fonts is that it shows you how your font choices impact your page speed. No other method does this, and this is something we should all be thinking about when building our websites.

The part you should pay attention to is “family=Rokkitt:400,700″. It is important to make sure both weights are included here separated by commas. Google goes so far as to show you how to call the desired font via CSS so you can use it in your site. You simply specify the font-family. If you want to use a variation of weight, you specify that by using the font-weight property. This will make sure that you use the font and the weight that you want. It is that simple, and you’re done!
Google web fonts are extremely easy to use in your website. You can browse over 600 web fonts with an easy-to-use interface. Google has made it easy to implement the fonts that you want by providing you with the proper scripts and the css to implement their web fonts into your website. They nearly make it fool-proof. They also show you how the number of fonts that you are using will affect your site’s page speed.

I still believe not to hire for your Primary Projects, because your clients trust you because of your work.

First let us look at the advantages of Outsourcing. Outsourcing can be very effective, if you have lots of projects, which you can’t handle at the time. Outsourcing help’s you to make more money, even without doing any work.
Now let us look at some disadvantages. In outsourcing, you need to search for a good person or company to outsource you work. Also they should be very responsible about the work they do, but in my career, I found many Careless outsource person. And sometime because of them, I lost some of my good clients. So before choosing the person, Get a detail profile of them.
Now let me move to the exact topic, which is Make More Money by Outsourcing Your Works
Yes, it is important not to outsource your any projects, you should know what to outsource and what you should not. In designing, I love to outsource my projects like, Business card designing, Bulk Logo designing Projects (Still you should check each and every work from your outsource worker) If you are in any other field that you think outsourcing will be best for you, then go for it, but once again don’t outsource your primary Projects.
There are lots of outsourcing companies are waiting for projects to work, but before choosing the company, please check their relation with clients, their works and the time when they complete. You can also browse fiverr, to outsource your related projects. Fiverr has a very nice concept, its very east to check the Gig owner Profile. Before buying any gig, have a look at their Reviews, Total Gigs collected, and the clients comments, what others are saying about him/her. Apart from Fiverr, usually I hire local designers from my locality. List out some of the good designers in your locality, talk to them related to the projects. Their charges, completing time, revisions etc.
Now come to making money from Outsourcing. What you have to do is, suppose you get 10 Business card designs projects, each of $50. Now here comes the tricky part. Hire a designer, who can design the business cards for $10. Now let calculate, 10×50=500, and your outsourcer will charge $10 for each that means 10×10 that is $100, and you get a very handsome commission of $400 by doing nothing but to manage it. Another tricky part is, if you get a project, which you think you can’t do it. For example you get a mascot design projects. You can easily charge the client from $500 to $900. So how you get the project done? Here comes the power of Crowdsourcing. Post your job on crowdsourcing site, I recommend you to use Freelancer.com, because it is the largest yet good workers. So Post your job there by pricing the project to something around $400-500. You will get many designs from the designer, by the freelancers at freelancer.com. When they post the designs, copy all the images and send them to the client, if the client select any of the design, immediately move to freelancer.com and announce the winner, When the contest will end. Get the required files, pay the winner and keep good amount with you.
